Is Ice Cream Bad for Your Teeth?

July 26, 2024

Colorful scoops of ice cream.

It sure is hot outside! No wonder there are so many activities centered around keeping cool this time of year. From splashing around in the pool to indulging in a delicious cone of hand-churned ice cream, beating the heat is summer’s number one challenge! But before you indulge too much in that sweet, refreshing dessert, here are the facts about how ice cream could affect your smile.

All About Ice Cream

Approximately 90 percent of all families are ice cream fans, making this seasonal sweet an absolute must during the summer’s hottest days. But while it may taste good, it can take a toll on your teeth, too.

Because it’s made of dairy, ice cream does contain calcium, which is great for your teeth and bones, but it is also packed with sugar, which in addition to affecting your waistline, can contribute to cavities.

How To (Safely) Indulge

If you are one of the myriad fans of this sweet treat, you may want to know how to enjoy it without putting your health at risk. While an occasional cone won’t do too much damage, if you do indulge, look for sugar free or low sugar options to keep your teeth safe. Furthermore, avoid flavors with pieces of gum or chewy candy in them, as these can stick to braces and dentures or even loosen restorations.

Be sure to eat your regular meal first before devouring your dessert, so you don’t go overboard and fill up with sugar and brush your teeth and floss after you’re done so that your teeth and gums are free of cavity-causing bacteria.

Sensitivity Issues

If you have sensitive teeth, eating cold foods like ice cream can sometimes hurt. Be sure to use a sensitive toothpaste that will help block the sensation of pain from the cold to your tooth’s nerves. If you still don’t see an improvement, speak to your dentist about treating your sensitivity with a special fluoride gel or prescription paste.

Remember, sweet treats like ice cream are fine in moderation, so there’s no need to ditch the cone entirely this summer. Just remember to indulge responsibly by choosing lower sugar options and cleaning your teeth well afterwards, and you’ll stay cool all summer long!
